Promised Butterflies

2025–ongoing

Promised Butterflies is an ongoing series that draws on archival photographs from Soviet print media, engaging with images of political ceremonies, collective rituals, and staged unity.

Within the series, carefully orchestrated scenes are disrupted by ambiguous, often disproportionate forms caught in suspended, pre-transformational states—intrusions that destabilise the image from within and unsettle its claims to order, coherence, and stability.

Rather than presenting transformation as something completed, the work focuses on its continuous deferral: a condition in which change is constantly promised yet never realised in its promised form, sustained through spectacle, repetition, and control.

All works are handmade; dimensions vary.
